Gil Cann - a Background Glimpse
[News Update and Prayer Requests]
For over thirty-fve years Gil Cann has been involved in pastoral, evangelistic, leadership training, and more recently, writing and consulting ministries.
After theological training, and three years pastoring Methodist churches he served for seven years as an evangelist with Campaigners For Christ in Papua New Guinea and Victoria. Then, during six years of ministry with the Fellowship For Revival in the Uniting church he focused on the building up of local churches in several states.
For sixteen years he served as a pastor of Truth And Liberation Concern, Melbourne, a non-denominational community founded in the early seventies primarily to relate the Gospel to unchurched people.
During this time he continued his wider ministry at the request of churches of all denominations throughout Australia and in Tonga, Fiji and Samoa. He was a delegate to the Billy Graham conferences for evangelists in Amsterdam in I 983 and in the U.S.A. in I 994. He has travelled to many countries where significant outreach, revival and church renewal have been taking place. He is also the author of the book Liberating Leadership, now widely used in churches around Australia.
Serving the Church
In 1994 he laid down his pastoral role to concentrate on encouraging and equipping church members and leaders - helping them to live out their faith, understand their times and fulfil God's role for them in building God's Kingdom. He now serves the wider church an evangelist, teacher and consultant, in his own name, and as a minister at large of both the Fellowship for Revival and the Australian Evangelical Alliance.
He lives in Melbourne with his wife Cathie. They have four daughters and a son.

“Everything we do in our churches should be relevant to its usefulness in making disciples. This is because the primary purpose of a church is to honour God and to extend His Kingdom by His means. Every year we should have a moratorium in our churches when we review our entire program, when we scrape off all the barnacles. We should ask ourselves whether the activities we had last year, or for the last ten, or one hundred, years are needed next year? There are simple ways of doing this. Why not lay down all your activities at the end of each year? Then, in the new year, only resume those activities for which there are people offering, who believe that God wants them to be so involved. Then scrap the rest, and be open to the new, appropriate ministries God may have you move into!”
